Dr. Simon Ghoulsby: The Last Resident of Darkwood Manor

Dr. Simon Ghoulsby became a professor at Miskatonic University in 1939.  Formerly he had taught at Miskatonic’s sister school, Transtonic University in Romania, where he had amassed some impressive credentials.  He was formally trained as a medical doctor, but after some years practicing medicine he took an appointment at Transtonic University’s newly formed department of parapsychology.  While there he rose to the top of his field, and published several books on the human body’s connection to paranormal energies.  One of his most popular, and controversial books was entitled, “The Lost Medical Science of the Ancients”.  In this book he transcribed many parts of the accursed Necronomicon, and how the information stored there could be applied to modern life-saving techniques.
Dr. Ghoulsby remained at Transtonic for nearly eight years, but when he heard that Miskatonic had an opening in their parapsychology department he applied to transfer.   Miskatonic’s administration was reluctant at first to accept him due to his radical theories, but his extensive background in the field made him a hard to refuse.
For 17 years, Dr. Simon Ghoulsby taught, and did his research at Miskatonic.  Although he was highly regarded by the school, he was never made head of the parapsychology department.  His theories about the Necronomicon could never be proven, but he never gave up on what he believed to be the truth behind the dread tome.  Whenever he was not teaching he could be found in a lab trying to prove his theories to no avail.  The repeated failures made him quite bitter as the years pasted.
In 1953 Dr. Ghoulsby discovered the papers written by a former student, Abigail Darkwood.  Ghoulsby poured through all the papers Miss Darkwood had written, and all the correspondence she had addressed to her former school.  It was not long before Dr. Ghoulsby discovered that the school still owned it’s former student’s estate, Darkwood Manor.  He requested an immediate sabbatical, so that he could go to Darkwood Manor to see if Abigail had left behind any of her research.  He told the school that his research and that of the former Miss Darkwood was, “…leading to the same goal, but from different directions.  Maybe she got farther than anyone imagines”
After some debate, the administration gave Dr. Ghoulsby permission to spend a period of time at the Darkwood home.
In the summer of 1956, Dr. Ghoulsby arrived in Luray, Virginia, and took up residence at Darkwood Manor.
One year later Dr. Simon Ghoulsby was found dead.  Another Miskatonic professor, Hiram Peters, discovered his body.  Peters was sent to Darkwood Manor to check on Dr. Ghoulsby condition.  The university had received several disturbing letters from the doctor, and they feared for his mental condition.
When Peters found Dr. Ghoulsby, his body was in an advanced state of decay.  He reported back to the school that, “Judging from the state of this body, I would say that Dr. Simon Ghoulsby died several days after he arrived here.”
However, the officials at Miskatonic knew this could not have been the truth.  The last letter they had received from the doctor had been posted less than a month prior to the finding of his body.  Even though the note was disturbing, it was confirmed to be Dr. Ghoulsby handwriting.   The letter only contained one line, “Don’t hunt what you can’t kill, and death can not die.”
What else Hiram Peters discovered at Darkwood manor, and the true nature of Dr. Ghoulsby's research was never released to the public.
Miskatonic University closed the doors on Darkwood Manor after the death of the doctor, and they left them that way.  Until now………….
